Desi...you make some great points! Rewarding kids with junk food as a reward does seem very weird, and I'm sure a lot of people do it without ever realizing it.

Also, earning the fake money to play on the computer is brilliant!
thanks for your comments!

oh, and while we're on the subject, we have a reward system for the computer/video games. if they want to play something non-educational, they have to do a chore. They earn fake money and spend it on the computer. For example unloading the dishwasher is $5 which equals 5 minutes. Perhaps I should add some pushups and squats to this system? :) This puts a definite limit on how much time they can spend killing whatever imaginary villain is out there that day, AND helps them learn some budgeting principles at the same time.

Jonas, this one hits where it hurts but it's true. For us, i find that it really starts in the grocery store. If I don't buy junk in the first place, it's easier to get the kids full on healthy things. Here's what we keep on hand. Nuts, clementines, bananas, cheese sticks, gogurts, apples, granola bars. water bottles. I do pay for the packaging but I'm pretty sure we come out ahead, and it's easy to throw these in a bag. One thing that seems strange to me is why everywhere we go people seem to want to shove junk food as a reward for the kids. Also, if we do give a treat as a reward, the kids are just about as happy with a couple of hershey's kisses or a few m & m's.
